Ricochet – Lyrics and Background

July 8th, 2008

Alright… I’m finally going to post one of the songs that I have contributed to Citizen Bare. I have always hoped that I would have an outlet for this song and am pleased to finally be able to perform it.

Story Behind the Song

Back in my sophomore year of high school I was in an English/Social Studies combined class called World Perspectives. World Perspectives was a very intriguing class, that I often found myself on the edge of getting in trouble in, yet always learning more about what I thought and believed. One project that was required of my classmates and I in this course was to write a parody of James Thurber’s pictoral story called The Last Flower. The point of the project was to teach us about the cyclical nature of history. It was a very cool assignment.

Thanks to Kevin Martell (The social studies teacher in the World Perspectives course) for helping me out by giving me the name of the author and the title of the story. I remembered why I wrote the song, but not the details surrounding it. Now, I will never forget.

If you watch this YouTube video, you will see that Ricochet is not a parody of the entire song. Instead it is a parody of the beginning and tries to offer up the ideal that we can prevent violence/war if we would get together and let love in.

Oh yeah…in case you are wondering…I got an “A” on my project.

Ricochet

by John Gratton

When the revolution begins
We’re gonna have a world
A world in despair
But after awhile
We’ll see the results
Of their actions

A world without love
A world without care
A world with a problem
And nothin’ to share

That’s all we need
Is you and me
To bring this world
Back to what it used to be
We can do it if we try
As hard as we can
It’s time to make a plan

Love will come back to you
The world will revive
Everybody get together
This time lets keep our world alive
Everybody get together
Let love come in
Everybody get together
Let love come in
Everybody get together
Let love come in
Let’s keep that bullet from ricocheting
Into our world

John, I always love to know the story behind a song. This is a great one–thanks for sharing it!
